We have been learning all about character traits and expanding our vocabulary with all sorts of new adjectives to describe the characters in the stories we read. We read Gloria Who Might Be My Best Friend, and we completed a graphic organizer on all the many traits of the two main characters, Gloria & Julian. In the story, these two best friends made a kite together, so we made our own kites! The bows are the character traits students chose to describe Gloria or Julian, and the colored sections on the kite is the text evidence from the story that matches the character trait on the bows.

The students were given a bag with a random item in it. They had to come up with ten adjectives related to it in hopes that the other groups would figure out the mystery item based on their clues. We have learned about a ton of different landforms and bodies of water in science. The students had to decide on four landforms and three bodies of water they wanted to recreate using their play dough. Many of them decided shared their play dough with each other so that they could have multiple colors. Their finished products are displayed in the library. They turned out AWESOME! Below: On Wednesday students were planning out the 4 landforms and 3 bodies of water they were planning to recreate. Below: On Friday we had fun with our play dough, showing what we know about landforms and bodies of water! As a way to get everyone caught up with writing pieces, we started pickles & ketchup! Students who have to "catch up" on writing have time to work, so they are the ketchup. Students who have finished everything get to be pickles and "pick" an activity! It was fun to see their excitement for puzzles and reading together. :) We have team points that we can earn as a table group... ways to earn these points are for having quick, quiet transitions, and showing me they are the first group ready. The winning table group that racks up the most points before I change their desks again gets lunch with me. A new addition to our team points is the "V.I.P. table". At the end of every week the team that has earned the most points gets to borrow a V.I.P. lanyard and star glasses for the day :). Congratulations to the Red Stars (Caine, Carli, Reilly, & Hunter)... the first V.I.P. winners!
Antonyms are OPPOSITES! We love reviewing learned skills and moving around at the same time. Students recorded the antonym word on their sheets that was the opposite of the word on the card. It's very hard to believe that we are over halfway through 2nd grade already... Time flies when you're having fun! Each student got a STAR award telling them how awesome they are! :) I'm very proud of the amount of growth they have all made so far this year, their motivation to meet and exceed their goals, and their kind, caring personalities that make 2R the best place to be!
We were getting lots of practice with reading big numbers! They are pros with knowing where to put the commas, and they understand the value of the digit changes based on its place in the number. This is my FAVORITE way to introduce opinion writing! We watched a short clip based on the book Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. It is an optical illusion, and the students had to form an opinion about it being a duck or a rabbit. They broke into two groups to write down ideas to support their opinion... They were very "top secret" about this, whispering so the other opinion group couldn't hear their ideas! We talked about how we are all entitled to our own opinion, and we can "respectfully disagree" with each other in a kind way. We then had a friendly debate at the end! We had a blast being string teachers to the kindergarteners! I loved seeing all of them take a leadership role, and taking these younger friends under their wing. I had a proud teacher moment watching them be the teachers! :) |
