Fall is finally here! I asked the students how many of them ever look at the clouds and imagine or "see" another item. We talked about images we see within the clouds. They then chose fall colored die cut leaves, and made a leaf picture to create a story with a problem and a solution. What imaginations! Take a look. (When they finish up their stories throughout the week I will make sure to update!) Click the picture to view it larger.

After learning about all the way seeds are dispersed in nature (wind, water, humans, animals, birds) we went on a sock walk outside to experience different types of seeds. We turned our white socks inside out on our hands to help the seeds stick better (just like animal fur!), and we were amazed at the amount of seeds and the many different types we found. After learning a lot about pollination, the students pretended like they were the bees buzzing around the room helping to pollinate flowers. They picked out cheese puffs from the flower cups. It was fun for them to see their cheesy, "pollen" fingers at the very end to show the process that really goes on in nature! They also were able to dissect a real flower and observe with magnifying glasses all of the parts of the plant. Many of them were able to experience real pollen on their fingers this time. Last week students learned about hard c and soft c sounds. This week they learned that the letter g also has a hard and soft sound! In partners they read Swim Like a Frog and recorded as many hard and soft g words they could find. Again, they were eager to go around the room and hunt for even more! Examples of hard g sounds: frog, dog, game (sounds like a g) Examples of soft g sounds: giant, gym, gem (sounds like a j) We celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day on Friday. The students participated in a few different centers: an apple chain craft that shows how an apple grows, a seed math game, they weighed and measured apples, read a story about Johnny Appleseed, and tasted green, red, and yellow apples. They voted on their favorite one and graphed it. A big thank you to our three parent volunteers, Gage's mom, Ella's mom, and Joey's mom, for spending the afternoon with us and helping all of our centers to be so successful! Another big thanks to everyone who generously donated apples :)! After learning about the steps of the scientific method, as second grade scientists we did an experiment following the steps. We asked a question: How many drops of water can fit on a penny? We formed a hypothesis: I think __#__ drops will fit on the penny. We made sure we had all of our materials: a penny, a dropper, a cup of water, and our recording sheet. The students needed to carefully squeeze one small drop of water onto the penny at a time and count! We learned that scientists need to do multiple trials of an experiment to get the most accurate results. We did about 8 trials and drew our conclusions. We then shared our results and findings with each other. To go along with our reading comprehension skill this week the students were paired together and discussed ways they compare with each other (how are we the same?) and how we contrast with one another (how are we different?). They talked about their likes, dislikes, interests, hobbies, etc. Their projects turned out fantastic! After learning the difference between hard c (the k sound) and soft c (the s sound), in partners the kids read Mice Can Race and wrote down as many hard & soft words that they could find. After reading they wanted to keep looking for more! It became a contest to see which partners could find and think of the most words that had the sounds in them. Examples of "hard c" sounds: camp, command, can, could. Examples of "soft c" sounds: mice, science, pencil, race. Today the class was introduced to desk writing... The looks on their faces when I told them about it was priceless! We will be using our desktops for many things in 2nd grade because dry erase marker comes off easily with a baby wipe-- they know not to try this at home :)! We will be sorting our spelling words into the correct phonics patterns, practicing math problems, and pictured below is always a favorite... Musical Spelling! To practice our spelling words for the test on Fridays, I play a song for a certain amount of time, tell them the word to practice, and they have to write it as many times as they can with the correct spelling before the music turns off. Friday had finally arrived! The kids were buzzing with excitement all day long! We could not wait to share this day with such fabulous family members. The kids had a blast listening to stories being read to them, singing songs, sharing their masterpiece heart crafts with their grandparents, and showing off their classroom. We spent quality time with special people. Thank you to those of you who stepped into the "grandparent" role for the day ;)! It was nice to meet everyone and invite them into our 2nd grade world! |
