We read Hey Little Ant! and formed an opinion if the ant should be squished (team boy) or if the ant should NOT be squished (team ant). We split up into groups based on opinion, and I loved seeing how well they worked together to listen to each other's ideas and bounce ideas off of one another. This is our last opinion writing topic, and they are loving it so far!

Last week we took a few minutes out of our day to go around to each other's desktops, and write kind, encouraging words or phrases to one another. We all talked about how it makes us feel good to compliment others, and it feels great to get compliments from each other, too. Our classroom community is so loving, caring, and encouraging. I'm so proud of the people they have grown to be this year! We learned about irregular past tense action verbs, so to practice and review we played VERBO! I said a present tense verb, and they had to find the irregular past tense verb on their verbo card. Five in a row up and down, side to side, and diagonally earned them a Verbo! As a way to show what we know about 2D plane shapes and attributes about them (number of sides, angles, and vertices), we created our very own geometry robots that include triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. Just like snowflakes, no two are exactly alike! :) We have learned about fast changes on our planet. We had to think, plan, and build like engineers to develop structures that could withstand a jello earthquake in this STEM challenge. All groups' structures survived the earthquake! I loved to see the teamwork and the way they collaborated to make their unique structures. Teams worked well together to build their own unique structures that were able to withstand and earthquake! Great job to everyone :)!
We love any chance we can get to write on our big whiteboard! Topic 11 is math is filled with many strategies for adding and subtracting 2 three-digit numbers. We spent some time this day practicing the standard algorithm strategy. On Friday we had some time to start the introduction to money. We started with the basics practicing identifying the penny, nickel, dime, quarter and how much each was worth. In a couple of math topics we will dive right into counting coins, adding, and subtracting money... It's the perfect time for students to start practicing money skills at home! Using real coins as manipulatives are a GREAT way to bring this to life. As an extra review from class, there are a ton of money videos that your child can watch at home on our website under the "students" tab --> "in class videos" --> & find them under the "math videos" heading. We have been working very hard on our crayon opinion pieces in writing. We read The Day the Crayons Quit, and after we formed our own opinions about which crayon is the best in the box. We brainstormed a bunch of ideas for each crayon on the board together, then we categorized all details into bigger main ideas. Groups of students worked together to brainstorm for their topic webs based on their favorite crayon colors. Their final papers look AMAZING! I am very proud of the writers they have grown to be throughout this year... the growth I have seen in each one of them is outstanding :). |
